The Green Valley Times Book Review

As we begin Quarter 2, I want to make sure we all have an interesting book to read for A.R. so that we can all reach our A.R. Goals.  For this week's blog post, we will each be writing a book review. Choose a book you think others will enjoy, particularly if you think many may not have read it. Nearly everyone has probably read the Harry Potter series, for example, so that would probably not be the right book to review for this assignment, even though I'm sure many people would enjoy it. Hopefully, we will generate a list of exciting reading for our classmates to reference. If there is a particular classmate you think will especially like the book, give them a "shout out"! Tell us a bit of what the book's about and why you think others will enjoy it. No spoilers! :)

I recommend Douglas Adams's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. During the 1970s, Douglas Adams was a writer for the British television series Doctor Who, so that may give you an idea of the type of writing he does: science fiction! The book is the first in a series of five comedic science fiction novels set after the destruction of Earth, but this doesn't lead our protagonist, Arthur Dent, into a dystopic vision of the future. Rather, it's a comedic romp through the vast universe. Most of the characters are alien lifeforms, and their ridiculous names make for some of the humor: Zaphod Beeblebrox, Marvin the Paranoid Android, Slartibartfast, Ford Prefect, and so on.

The book's title refers to a fictional travel guidebook for hitchhikers. Ford saves Arthur and takes him on travels through the galaxy, trying to get to the Restaurant at the End of the Universe, but bumbling into scrapes and messes along the way. In trying to reach a legendary planet known for selling luxury, they come across a computer named Deep Thought which has spent years trying to calculate the meaning of life -- and it's about to complete its calculations. If you want to find out the meaning of life, read on!

Shout out to Apolo! I think you  might like this one!

  1. I reccomend Ellen Raskin's The Westing Game. Sam Westing was murdered in his house and in his wil he said the person to find the one who murdered him, will win his fortune. There are sixteen players, they are all heirs of Sam Westing. All of them are accused of being the one who murdered Sam Westing. You can predict the murderer and the winner in this mysterious book.

Decoding clues throughout the book will give you hints about the murder. All the players have different personalities that led to conflicts in the story. The book is full of surprises you wouldn't be expecting. If you want to find the murderer, go ahead and start reading this book. Good luck trying to find the murderer and may the odds be ever in your favor.

  2. (( I just wanted to say...42 is LIFE! ))

[Most of this summary is found in the first two chapters. Sorry, but no spoilers! ^^]

"Uglies" by Scott Westerfeld is a very interesting dystopian series that manifests the importance of being beautiful on the inside and not changing our appearance to fit the appeal of others.

"Uglies", the first book in the en-capturing series, starts off by introducing the reader to a young girl, Tally Youngblood, that has not reached the age of 16. In her world, every child or teenager, on their 16th birthday, goes through a remarkable process that makes the person "super-model gorgeous". They will have no imperfections in their physical appearance. Once they go through this process, they are allowed to live in the town of the Pretties, where all the citizens that have undergone the process reside. Tally is an Ugly - she hasn't reached the age for her changing and is impatiently waiting for her 16th birthday so she may be able to join her best friend, Peris. In the three months before her birthday, she decides that she cannot stand waiting any longer to join her friend, and creeps into the city of the Pretties, fully aware that her actions are illegal. On her visit, she realizes that everyone changes when they become Pretty - Peris doesn't seem to want to befriend Tally while Tally is an Ugly. And so, disheartened, Tally makes her way back after a tiring chase with the police. On her way, she meets Shay, who will become her friend.

But unlike Tally, Shay does not wish to become a Pretty. And so Tally is tangled up in a web of betrayal, confusion, and deceit - all while learning about inner beauty. This book is a masterpiece that conveys our inner feelings about ourselves. Scott Westerfeld defines the essence of being pretty with the way he manipulates the words and gives the readers a sense of understanding. The book will make you question yourself and what you wish to be, which will lead inevitably to discovering yourself. The series is full of twists and turns, and is unlike most dystopian novels in many ways.

Go read it. No, seriously. Go. Read. It. Now.

  3. I recommend "The Warrior Heir" by Cinda Williams Chima. It's the first book in "The Heir" series. The whole series is basically about magic. The book starts off introducing the character, Jack. He's 16 years old, and he lives in a small town in Ohio called Trinity. He thinks that he's a regular boy. The only thing that made him different was the medicine he had to take every day. One day, he skips his medicine. He felt stronger, fiercer, and more confident than ever before! He felt great, until he loses control over his power, and nearly kills another person on his soccer team during tryouts.

He soon learns the truth about himself. He is a Weirlind, part of an underground magical society that lives among us. At the helm, sits the two feuding houses of the White Rose and Red Rose, whose power is determined by playing The Game. The game is a magical tournament in which each house sponsors a warrior to fight to the death. The winning house rules the Weir. As if this wasn't enough for Jack, he finds out that he's one of the last warriors in the world, at a time when both houses are scouting for a player.

    Really great book.

  4. I recommend the Thirteenth Child by Patrica C. Wrede. It's apart of a three part book series about a girl named Francine or more commonly known as Elf and her twin brother Lan. Now Lan is the seventh son of a seventh son meaning he will be a powerful magician however, Elf is also the seventh daughter but, she is also the thirteenth child meaning she will bring misfortune and terrible thing to the people around her. Due to this, most of her family hates her except her twin brother and her parents. But when her father unexpectedly tells them they're moving to the frontier, Elf tries to keep her misfortune a secret.

The setting is in the Wild West with an occasional trip to the city but that's all. Not to mention, one big draw to the book is protagonist Elf. Seeing as she suppose to be "evil" she is scared of any sort of magic she does and is always second guessing herself due to her past experiences with her family. Not to mention, another thing I enjoy about Elf is that she isn't very powerful which I thought was very cool to see as most protagonists are very powerful and strong. Overall, Thirteenth Child is a very good book for anyone who would want to read about an alternate Wild West with a twist of fanstasy to it.

  5. I recommend "The Extraordinary Adventures of Alfred Kropp" by Rick Yancey. It is part of a three part book series about a guy named Alfred Kropp and his Uncle Farrell. Uncle Farrell is a security guard and is in a great need of money. Alfred Kropp is a descendant of Lancelot ,meaning that he is a knight. Since Uncle Farrell needs money, a man named Arthur Myers offers him one million dollars for the return of an object stolen from him by Uncle Farrell's boss. Read the book to find out what happens next.

The setting is in Knoxville, Tennessee. But they also go to France and England. Alfred Kropp's father is actually Uncle Farrell's boss. But Alfred does not know that because his dad abandoned him and the mom when he was a baby. There is a secret about Alfred Kropp's father; he is a knight. His name is Bernard Samson and he left to protect Alfred and his mom. Alfred goes on a great adventure to save the world. This book is action packed and very exciting.

  6. I recommend "My Friend Flicka" by Mary O'Hara. This 1941 novel is the first in the trilogy. A ten-year old named Kenneth McLaughlin, lives on Goose Bar Ranch, just out Cheyenne, Wyoming. He lives with his practical father, Rob; mother, Nell; and older brother, Howard. Rob is often unsatisfied with Ken. who daydreams on a daily basis. Nell is more sympathetic and shares his sensitive nature. Howard has more of an attitude like Rob. Ken's dreams and love of horses keep him away from what's going on in the real world. This book is about adventure, love, and along with sympathy.

Ken struggles to please his family. However. he comes back from boarding school with poor grades, sending him back to face fifth grade again. With Rob even more dismayed, Nell manages to persuade him to allow Ken have a colt, or a young male horse, from the herd. Instead, he chooses a sorrel chestnut filly, or young female horse. He calls her Flicka, Swedish for "little girl". In the process of capturing this fast horse, a high barbed wire fence gets in her way of escape. She becomes severely injured with wounds that fester and soon becomes a dangerous blood infection. Ken soon has a major problem of his own, in which keeps him from being able to care for Flicka. He does not want to leave her side. Will Ken be able to save Flicka?

  8. I would recommend the book, "The Sight" by David Clement-Davies. This novel is about a pack of wolves that try to kill Morgra and get rid of a curse that she set upon their pack. The pack members are:Huttser, Palla, Khaz, Kipcha, Brassa, Bran, Larka and Fell. Later, Kar and Palla's brother Skop join their pack. Many die along the way, but in the end they win. The Sight is a power that not many wolves have, and is quite difficult to control. Only a very small amount is known about the Sight, and most wolves consider it to be a myth. Wolves who have the gift of the Sight have potential to have certain powers that I won't say.

This is an adventurous book. It is about 500 pages long, yet is a very good book. Very detailed book and when I read it i felt like I was actually there. Reading range: 6.1 , AR Pts: 23.0.. Many unexpected events happen in this book. Also in about the beginning of the book, I thought that many events hit you as you read. If you read this book, I hope you enjoy. :D

  9. A book I recommend is If I Stay by Gayle Forman. This book is about a teenage girl, named Mia, who got in a catastrophic car accident. She is in a coma. (This kinda is a spoiler, but it kinda shapes the story plot so I have to include it... Sorry) In an instant, her whole world is shattered. She watches as her friends and family gather in the hospital where she is being helped. Mia watches as her memories flash by as she comes to realize that she has the power to wake herself up. She must decide whether she should wake up and lead a life far more hard than she anticipated, or slip away to her death.

Mia is a quiet, musically gifted person. She is also the protagonist of the book. Teddy is Mia's little brother, and they are very close. Mia worries about him the most, wondering if he died alongside their parents. Kat and Denny are Mia and Teddy's parents. Adam is Mia's boyfriend. Mia's parents approve of Adam. Kim is Mia's best friend. They are very similar, they could even be sisters. She and Mia are inseparable. This is a romantic, hopeful book. It is exactly 234 pages long. If you read and love the book, you will definitely have to read the sequel, Where She Went.
**Shout out to Kayla A.** Caution: this book makes you cry a little, it might be me though, I cry in every book, so it might or might not make you cry...

  10. A book I would recommend is The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket. It is the first book of Series of Unfortunate Events. The book is about 3 orphans that recently lost their parents in a fire. A banker then gives them to one of the kid's relatives, Count Olaf, and the kids realize that he is a villain. The series continues on with them running away to many places, escaping Count Olaf stealing their fortune.(P.S it may not seem like it but I am not spoiling the book)

The three orphans are Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire. Violet is 14 and the eldest of the orphans. She is an amazing inventor, and when she thinks of inventions, she ties her hair into a ribbon to keep it out of her face. Klaus is 12 and the middle child. He is extremely smart for his age and reads more books than other people do in a lifetime. He sometimes helps his siblings with words or phrases they don't understand. Sunny is a baby and the youngest Baudelaire;her age is unknown. She has two irregular big teeth and loves biting things. The banker's name is Mr. Poe and he is in charge of the family's events. He is coughing all the time. Count Olaf is the main villain in the story and a distant relative of the Baudelaires. He has a big unibrow and a mysterious tattoo of an eye in his ankle.

  11. The book I would recommend you guys to read is Stormbreaker from the Alex Rider series by: Anthony Horowitz. I would recommend it because it is all about action, there is no part in the book that isn't about action. Most kids love these types of books, because I loved the whole series. The book is about Alex who doesn't know he is going to work for the MI6, when his uncle dies on a mission.

Alex is trying to stop Darrius Sayle who created a computer system that is very harmful. He is trying to give it to every body in the world. Alex didn't know what he was getting in to by joining the MI6. Alex is trying to stop Styles by being his " biggest fan " who got to try to use the system first and try to stop him on his mission. This is my favorite book so I recommend you to read it. I hope you enjoy it.

  12. I recommend the book “Maze Runner” by James Dashner. This book has a level of 5.3, is worth 15.0 points, and is 375 pages long. It is a very action packed book, and you won’t want to put it down. The main character is Thomas. He, along with other teenage boys, was sent to the Glade, the safe zone of the Maze, and had no recollection of his past whatsoever. Their goal is to escape the maze. Sounds easy but it’s not!

The first ever girl arrives at the Glade a day after Thomas. She gives a message that sends chills down the Gladers’ backs. Follow Thomas’ adventure in the Maze in this interesting and compelling novel, as well as in the rest of the series. This book has also been made into a major motion picture. I suggest you read the book first because, in my opinion, it is better than the movie.

  13. A book I would recommend the class to read is "The Graveyard Book" by Neil Gaiman. Around Halloween this is a great book to read to get you into the season. The boys Name is, Nobody Owns, also known as Bod. He is a normal boy but he would be ordinary if he didn't live in a graveyard. His family was murdered and now he grows up with a family of ghosts. Bod doesn't belong with the dead or the living, but if he leaves the graveyard he is in danger of the man who killed his family.

This book is full of nail biting moments that will make you feel as if you were in the book. Throughout the book you will feel sympathy for Bod because his life is like an emotional roller coaster. For example, he begins to gain friendship with a girl but then loses the friendship. He starts, school but gets bullied by a couple of kids . The book is 307 pages, with a level of 5.1, and is worth 10 points. I hope you take this book into consideration.

  14. The book I recommend for people to read is “The Girl of Fire and Thorns” by Rae Carson. The A.R. level is 5.0. It is worth 15 points and has 448 pages. Elisa, the main character, faces her own problems and proves everyone including herself she is more powerful than they thought. In this book the message I got from it is do not think you are worthless. Also the book is about Elisa finding herself and her path.
Elisa lives with her sister and her dad she is supposed to do something great for her god in the book because she is the bearer of the godstone. She thinks someone else should bear the stone because she thinks she can’t do anything. Once she marries a king in a neighboring land she soon goes on a journey and meets her true love. In no sense is she a warrior but she ends up proving she is braver. I hope some people will look into the book because it is very good.

  15. The book I'd reccomend to peopel is Theodore Boone The Actavist by John Grisham. It's the fourth book in the Theodore Boone series, so you'd want to read the first three also. Since there are many of you that haven't read the first three, a brief summary would help you understand this book.

Theodore Boone is the son of two great lawyers. He practically lives in the court room and often debates on weather to be a lawyer or judge. He also makes appearances in animal court as a lawyer to help his friends and classmates keep their pets. In the first book he attempts to help solve a murder case from his small town. In the second his best friend, April, is apparently kidnapped, but when the authorities can't solve the case him and his crazy exlawyer uncle solve the case. In the third book the murder case from the first book comes back, but an unhappy client of his mother starts framing him for crimes.

Circling back to the fourth book "The Actavist" in this book there are major budget cuts made in his county and his school's music department is terminated. He then finds out the budget cuts are to make a highway to go around the city and save people about 5 minutes. Theo and his friends go watch them building the highway, and some construction workers get mad at them and chase them off. Theo's dog ends up in critical condition. They than go through a bunch of protest, and the decision is to be made in a public meeting. In that meeting Theo gives a nice heartfelt speach/argument. Will this be enough to change their decision on building the highway?

  16. A book I recommend to everyone is the "Gregor the Overlander" series by Suzanne Collins. It contains 5 books and, in all, 319,113 words. The main character, as you can guess, is Gregor. While in his apartment in New York City, he discovers a secret passage which leads to an under ground city underneath the very hearth in NYC. There he discovers giant bats, rats, cockroaches, and spiders.

Once he is there, he is supposedly a savior and a part of a link of prophecies which involve him and various members of his family to go into dangerous territories and places. The reason this book series is so good is because it never stops getting your hearth racing. I had to finish each of the books in one day because I couldn't stand not knowing what is going to happen.the giant animals somewhat go with Halloween but that could be debatable but, nevertheless, it is a great series that everyone should read.

P.S: I think Ms. Mansour has it in her class.

  17. If you enjoyed Divergent, you'd enjoy Marie Lu's Legend series. The books have two alternating perspectives, one for June and one for Day. June is a fifteen year old prodigy. Like June,Day is also a fifteen year old except is the Republic's most wanted criminal. Although, maybe his intentions are better than they seem.

In Legend,June's brother,Metias, dies (not really a spoiler but it shapes the plot so I had to include it) and Day becomes the main suspect. As June strives the find out who killed Metias,Day struggles to save his family's lives. As the story progresses, they learn more about each other and unexpected events unfold in Legend. S/O TO KARINA,I THINK YOU'LL LIKE THIS BOOK! Looking for AR information about Legend? Well I got your back.

  18. I recommend the book "The Fault in our stars" by John Green. The Fault in our stars is about a girl named Hazel who has a tumor in her lungs, making breathing difficult for her so she has a cannula. She goes to a support group and one day, she meets someone named Augustus. He stares at her and after supposed group, they go to a movie and learn more about each other. Hazel offers Augustus the book An Imperial Afflection for him to read. After reading it, they email the author for answers on the book for afterwards...they get an interesting response....

Peter Van Houten offers the two teens to come to Amsterdam to meet him in person for answers. At first, Hazels cancer problem pushes off the trip, but eventually they go. Augustus and hazel have an amazing night out in Amsterdam when they arrive. The next day, they go to Van Houten for answers. Soon enough, Hazel learns something about Augustus when they go home which changes everything.

  19. I recommend "Paper Towns" by John Green, it's worth 13 points, and has a reading level is 5.4. I recommend this book because I'm guessing a lot of people have already read this book, but it really gives you a whole new thought about life.

In this story the main character is Quentin, but he's called Q, and it's like a mix of a mystery, adventure story. It's about him and his friends traveling from place to place finding clues about Margo's (Q's neighbor/crush) whereabouts. Basically, Margo runs away and isn't coming back, like she normally does and everyone is freaking out, but she's technically an adult now (18 years old), so there's not much that they can do. Q and his friends try to find her, gathering, analyzing, and carrying out the clues she's left for them.

This book makes you think about the different people there are and how most people hide behind a facade or a mask. They seem like any other person or like a total cliche person you find in books and movies, but there's always something behind the mask. You don't always know how a person really is no matter how much you think you do. There could be a deeper meaning to life to them and they don't want anyone to find out...

  20. I'd recommend the book "The tale of Despereaux" by Kate DiCamillo. This book is about an a little mouse named Despereaux, who was born different from other mice. He's adventurous, courageous, and brave which seems as a threat to the mice community. He falls in love with a beautiful princess and sets on a quest to rescue her using his special qualities that other mice do not inherit. Despereaux shows what it takes to make a difference even though he doesn't look like much.

The personality of Despereaux and the situations he goes through and overcomes gives the reader a reason to love this book, not to mention how amazingly executed the story is. The story of Despereaux follows along with the story of a dungeon rat, Rascuro, and Miggery Sow, a servant girl. These three characters each have their side of the story that merge together nicely in the end for a complete climax. Overall, "The Tale of Despereaux" is a heartwarming, and well written book that keeps you hooked and interested to the end which is why I recommend it to all.

  21. I recommend the book "Maze Runner" by James Dashner. The book is about a group of teenagers that have been stuck in a maze for 2 years with a new kid coming into the maze about every month. Their memories about themselves have been wiped out and all they know is their first name and some things about the world before they were put in the maze. They were put in the maze to be tested on for a disease that is killing everybody. Then one day, a boy named Thomas and a girl named Teresa were sent to the maze and everything changed.

A lot of people would enjoy this book because it is exciting and once you start reading it is tough to put down. The idea is very interesting and the group of teenagers have to work together to solve the maze. Overall, the Maze Runner is a great book that is good for anyone.

Billy lives in the heart of the ozark mountains in oklahoma, and loves to coon hunt with his dogs. Billy spends all of his time with the dogs, after he worked so hard to get them.

  23. I recommend "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" by Brian Selznick. The protagonist is a twelve year old orphan named Hugo Cabret. He takes over his uncle's job of tending the clocks in a train station after his uncle goes missing. At the same time, he tries to fix an automaton which once belonged to his deceased father. Hugo would do anything to fix the machine, and even steals parts to fix it. He thinks that once the machine is fixed, it would reveal something about his father.

Through out the story, Hugo is seen trying to hide the fact that he is an orphan. He constantly has to escape the Station Inspector because he doesn't want to leave the machine. Just like how he steals parts to fix the automaton, he steals food and other things to survive. Upon stealing various parts of a toy mouse from a toy booth, he runs in to the booth owner, and the owner's goddaughter, Isabelle. His goddaughter's necklace had a key on it; One that looked astonishingly like it would fit inside of the mysterious machine his father owned. Who could these people be, and why would this girl have the key to his father's machine? This book tells the amazing story of Hugo Cabret, and his life. I definitely recommend that you read it.

  24. I reccomend The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. The Mortal Instruments is about a girl named Clary and her best friend Simon as they discover the shadowhunting world, which Clary's mom tried to keep from her. It focuses on Clary as she learns more about herself about herself, her family, and her destiny. Every chapter in this series is filled of twists, turns, and shockers that you couldn't begin to imagine on your own. In my opinion, Cassandra Clare is almost as amazing an author as J. K. Rowling. Almost.

Besides The Mortal Instruments, Cassandra Clare has also written The Infernal Devices and The Bane Chronicles. The Infernal Devices is the prequel series for The Mortal Instruments. It is about the shadowhunting world before The Mortal Instruments. The Bane Chronicles focuses on a wizard named Magnus Bane, an.....interesting character, who plays a huge role in both The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices. On top of these series, Cassandra Clare is also writing The Dark Artifices, which takes place after The Mortal Instruments. This series will include three books: Lady Midnight, Prince of Shadows, and The Queen of Air and Darkness. The first book, Lady Midnight, will be published in 2015.

  25. I recommend "The Lord of the Rings" books written by J.R.R Tolkien. All of these books follow the tales of a hobbit named Frodo. A hobbit (long story short) is a short creature less than half the height of your average human. Anyway, Frodo, after his uncle's birthday, receives a ring in which Bilbo had found on an adventure that he had a time ago. Sent on a quest with his friend named Sam by and old friend named Gandalf, Frodo discovers the rings true power and becomes determined to destroy the ring.

Throughout the books, Frodo makes friends, enemies, and hits some roadblocks right when he thinks he's in the clear. The trilogy is a classic and would interest anyone who as any liking whatsoever in the would of fantasy, magic, and thrilling adventures. Other books written by J.R.R Tolkien such as "The Hobbit", give narrative to the life of Bilbo Baggins and to how he finds the ring that Frodo tries to destroy, enrich these tales of adventures in a fantasy land. J.R.R. Tolkien has many books, but if you're looking for classics and fantasy literature to read about, I strongly recommend "The Lord of the Rings".

  27. The book that I recommend is The Maze Runner by James Dashner. This is a book full of action that will leave you on the edge of your seat. This book is about a group of teenagers that have been somehow placed in an area of harsh conditions. For example, the "gladers" are surrounded by maze in every direction. In addition, they are constantly being attacked by violent pieces of machinery known as the grievers.

This book is a roller coaster of emotions. At one moment, there will be tons of action, and in just a moment you will be left wondering. For instance, there is this one part when Thomas and Minho get trapped in the maze over night and have to fight past several grievers to make it to the morning. The author, James Dashner, does an excellent job of describing each and every one of the characters.
