It's the boys' turn! We discussed our perspectives last time on whether or not Disney princesses are good role models for girls. This time, I pose the following question: Are comic book superheroes good role-models for boys?
In an article for The Telegraph, Richard Alleyne, science correspondent, writes, "Superheroes promote violence and revenge." You can read the article here: Superheroes Send Out Wrong Messages to Boys
On the other side, the writers at Popular Mechanics express admiration for superheroes. They write, "adversity and moral lessons go with the awesome visual effects." You can read the article here:Are Modern Superheroes Bad Role Models?
What do you think?
Remember, as always, your response should be two full paragraphs. You should use textual evidence from either article to help support your perspective, and you should respond appropriately to your classmates' points of view.

I believe that superheros are horrible role models for boys. Although courage and justice were the main themes of many superheros, they do not show up in many of today's superhero movies. Richard Alleyne writes that phsycologists say,"Watching superheros beat up villians may not be the best image for boys to see"(Superheros send out 'wrong message' to boys). This just goes to show that nowadays every superhero movie has violence in it, which sends out the message that it is okay to beat someone up if they do something 'wrong' or 'injust'. It's no wonder many people, especially boys, seem to think that violence is the solution to every problem.
ReplyDeleteFurthermore, superheros with cool superpowers may influence some boys to get into a terrible 'accident' or have something horrible happen to them, such as be bit by a radioactive spider, as Spiderman was. And since no superhero movies are true nor the heros real, this could lead to the unfortunate and unwise boy getting seriously hurt, or worse. This is a HUGE problem that superhero movies cause. Thankfully, I haven't heard of this happening yet, but that doesn't mean that it won't. Also, some superheros may encourage boys to do stupid little things, such as wear their underpants over a pair of tights. Ew.
I believe that superheroes are both good and bad influences. First, let's talk about them being good influences. Peter parker (a.k.a. Spider-man) decides "to devote himself to the life of an evil-defeating superhero, instead of living happily ever after with Mary Jane" (popularmechanics.com/technology/digital/fact-vs-fiction/superheroes-and-role-models). He would rather help people instead of having the girl of his dreams. In the movie "Spider-Man", Peter tells Mary Jane "I will always be your friend. That's all I have to give."
ReplyDeleteThe only reason superheroes are "bad" role models is because of the script writers or producers that change the super hero to make money of the movies. As Dr Sharon Lamb said, "There is a big difference in the movie superhero of today and the comic book superhero of yesterday" (telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/7941690/Superheroes-send-out-wrong-message-to-boys.html). If you think about, it cannot be actors just changing to the story to fit young boys' criteria. Movie producers know how to manipulate the movie to make them get more money because of the little boys, or girls, watching the movie over and over. I mean c'mon, you cannot hate Robert Downey Jr. Its Robert Downey Jr.
I think superheroes are both bad and good. They are bad because they are to violent, and boys believe now they can do that too. Popular Mechanics says,” From their findings, they concluded that violence, emotional aloofness and general hyper-masculinity are the prevailing messages marketers of these products promote to young boys.” This shows that boys of any age are turning and being to violent and hurting others. All that boys are doing is watching men beat up villains and thats why boys are getting the message that violence is the answer.
ReplyDeleteAlso, superheroes are also telling boys to do the right thing. I say this because superheroes are protecting many thousands of people and saving their lives. If we didn’t have superheroes in movies it would just be villains harming people. This sends the message that boys can be good citizens and be vigilantes. Superheroes can send a good and a bad message to people but you shouldn’t be violent to others anyway.
I think that superheroes are bad role models. Superheroes like Iron Man, or Tony Stark, are great examples of bad role models. Tony is always seeking out revenge. Even when he does what he is supposed to do which is save people, he always has to brag. Telegraph.com says, “Watching superheroes beat up villains may not be the best image for boys to see if society wants to promote kinder, less stereotypical male behaviours, they claim.’ Superheroes like Iron Man are doing the exact opposite of what society thinks is morally right. Tony Stark cares more about his self image than actually doing his job to keep his city safe.
ReplyDeleteIn addition, superheroes teach boys that you can only be one thing, a player. Boys receive the message that they have to be strong, good-looking and rich to be successful. Then, when they can’t fulfill these set requirements that’s when they can become slackers. Slackers are the students that are constantly making jokes, are constantly off task, and never finishing their assignments. For someone we call superheroes, they are not what you would expect to be super.
I believe that superheroes are mostly bad role models for boys. As Dr. Sharon Lamb of the University of Massachusetts said, "There is a big difference in the movie superhero of today and the comic book superhero of yesterday"(Superheroes send out 'wrong message' to boys). The past comic superheroes were less aggressive and speaks to the virtue of doing good for humanity, but today's "Hollywood superheroes" are more aggressive and are non-stop violent in movies. "Watching superheroes beat up villains may not be the best image for boys to see if society wants to promote kinder, less stereotypical male behaviours, they claim," Richard Alleyne writes in "Superheroes send out 'wrong message' to boys".
ReplyDelete"One was the superhero image, created as someone who shows their masculinity through power over other people, through exploiting women, showing their wealth, and through sarcasm and superiority," Dr. Lamb says(Superheroes: Bad Role Models for Boys?) Th superheroes influence boys to do stupid things and be who they aren't such as, slackers. Slackers are students who don't school and never get things done. Please don't them.
I think that super heroes could be bad influences for many reasons. For example, you wouldn't want your kid to jump off buildings because he thinks he is spider man or superman. Also would you want him/her to beat up a kid just because he may be a bad guy? Super heroes can teach kids violence and other things that kids shouldn't do. But superheroes can also be a good influence.
ReplyDeleteSuperheroes could be good influences by helping others. For example, they save the world. This could spread the message to help the world. Also they help others from bad guys. Then people could know to help others out when they need it. Superheroes can be both good and bad influences.
I believe that superheros are not good for kids. For example, as Dr. Sharon Lamb analyzes, "violence, emotional aloofness and general hyper-masculinity are the prevailing messages marketers of these products promote to young boys" (Are Modern Superheros Bad Role Models?).
ReplyDeleteDr. Lamb also points out that, "Today's superhero is too much like an action hero who participates in non-stop violence; he's aggressive, sarcastic and rarely speaks to the virtue of doing good for humanity" (Superheros send out the wrong message to kids). This shows how superheros guide kids the wrong way. Additionally, kids will look up to superheros, But kids should not look up to superheros when the superheros are teaching the wrong thing.
I think superheros are both good and bad role models. They are not good role models because they promote violence to little kids. Telegraph.co.uk says, "Today's superhero is too much like an action hero who participates in non-stop violence; he's aggressive, sarcastic and rarely speaks to the virtue of doing good for humanity." (Superheroes send out 'wrong message' to boys). This shows that the superheros of today do too many violent things without showing anything good about it. Furthermore, boys or girl who want it may think that beating up is good regardless if they are good or not.
ReplyDeleteHowever, superheros can be role models as well. Like what Ben said, "superheroes are also telling boys to do the right thing". Superheros help people in need by protecting them from bad guys. Plus, they can teach certain values, for example Popular Mechanics states, "The Incredibles is by all definitions an action superhero movie, but one that is centered on family values" (Are Modern Superheroes Bad Role Models?). This shows that superheros can show good values like taking care of your family. Although superheros can have good and bad influences on people, it's up to you to decide what to do.
I think that superheroes are bad role models. They are bad role models because they promote violence. They also strayed away from doing good for humanity. For example, Dr. Sharon Lamb said,"Today's superhero is too much like an action hero who participates in non-stop violence; he's aggressive, sarcastic and rarely speaks to the virtue of doing good for humanity"(Superheroes send out 'wrong message' to boys). This is true. If movies were more like the Superman movies in the 70s and 80s, which show kids responsibility, kindness, and respect, then they would be good role models. Movies like that would be good for children. (Despite being Boring)
ReplyDeleteSuperheroes are also being looked up to by children and they want to be like them. This could lead someone to be in an accident to gain powers. Examples of these such heroes are: Spider-Man(bit by radioactive spider), Hulk(gamma radiation spill), Iron Man (heart was destroyed), Fantastic Four(Infrared Sun rays) , etc. All these superheroes are being looked up to by children and these children and if they got fame, fortune, and powers in an accident, why can't they.
(Superheroes are still awesome anyways)
I think that super heroes are both good and bad role models. Superheroes show bravery and courage by saving towns and cities and others, yet they do this through violence. In the article 'here:Are Modern Superheroes Bad Role Models?' Lamb says that, ". In blockbuster action movies, however, superheroes are portrayed as bigger, badder and more violent versions of their comic book selves." Superheroes in books aren't as violent as the superheroes in movies.
ReplyDeleteBoys will most likely watch the movies and not read the comic books. Then they will see the violence they go through to save the lives of others. This might influence boys to think that, 'the only way to save others and be good is through violence', which is not true.
-Taylor S.
Ibelieve that superheroes are good role models. they risk their lives to defend innocent people, and fight for justice. They show you to fight for what you beleive is right. I think that they are not just good examples for boys, but for everyone. Movies like the incredibles and batman and spiderman show this for example.
ReplyDeleteFor example that superheroes are good role models, popularmechanics.com states , "The Incredibles is by all definitions an action superhero movie, but one that is centered on family values." . This shows that they dont just value fighting as most people think. another good example that superheroes are good role models is batman. Batman doesnt fight just because he feels like it, but to protect gotham and its people. it says on popularmechanics.com that, "his sense of duty and responsibility to the people comes out after the fighting" . This shows that he fights for the right reasons and is a good example to everyone.
these are the reasons that I beleive that suerheroes are good role models to everyone. They fight for what is right, seek justice, and protect innocent people . and if people say that they are bad role models, i would strongly dis agree with them. they say they promote viloince in children. Face it people! what would superheroes do if they didnt use violence, ask them politely to stop?
I agree with you, saying, "They risk their lives to defend innocent people, and fight for justice." As you said, they can't just ask the villain to stop. That "superhero" would be made fun of and be seen as plain crazy.

I think superheros are good and bad influences on boys. Some superheros are bad influences because of how the director scripts them. For example in the article "Superheroes Send Out The Wrong Messages To Boys" stated "Dr Sharon Lamb, of the University of Massachusetts, said that modern depictions of superheroes like Iron Man are often playboy millionaires who are only ruled by selfish goals." This shows that the directors are the ones who send out the wrong image of superheroes to boys. But the heroes do some things that are good.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand superheroes can be good to. The original comic book superheroes were good influences on young boys. In the article "Are Modern Superheroes Bad Role Models" it states " The original comic book characters, according to Lamb, were better role models." This proves that there are superheroes were good role models in some cases. In conclusion it depends on the director if the superhero is a good or bad influence.
I think that superheroes are horrible role models for kids for multiple reasons. Yeah, the shows or movies may be fun to watch but not good for making them your role model. For example, Dr. Sharon Lamb said,"Today's superhero is too much like an action hero who participates in non-stop violence; he's aggressive, sarcastic and rarely speaks to the virtue of doing good for humanity"(Superheroes send out 'wrong message' to boys). This evidence shows that superheroes nowadays just do acts of nonstop violence.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, superheroes can also be good role models too. Just like Kayla said, "original comic book superheroes were good influences on young boys."In the article "Are Modern Superheroes Bad Role Models" it states " The original comic book characters, according to Lamb, were better role models." So this proves that it sometimes depends on the way the director intended the movie or tv show to look like. But just like Jamal said, superheroes are still awesome!
In order to really determine if superheroes are good or bad role models for kids, you need to include multiple superheroes. Telegraph.co.uk states that,
ReplyDelete"Modern movie superheroes are bad role models for boys as they promote violence and revenge as a way of life, claim psychologists".
They then proceeded to use the phrases "today's superheroes" and "modern superheroes" with a few itty bitty mentions of actual names. This is a generalization of dozens of superheroes. You can't just go picking and choosing the ones that support your claim. Over 200 exist, and it's not right to let them all be represented by a few that have been selected over a bias. A good majority are bad role models, while a good majority are great role models, and they all fall somewhere in between.

(More paragraphs are on their way don't worry)(i wrote too much and it won't fit)
People keep arguing that Tony Stark is a bad role model, but the thing about that is that Stan Lee intended him to be bad. "I think I gave myself a dare... I thought it would be fun to take the kind of character that nobody would like, none of our readers would like, and shove him down their throats and make them like him....And he became very popular" (The Invincible Iron Man 'Ultimate 2-Disc Edition Iron Man DVD'). He has also experienced a very large amount of trauma during his life, and the decisions that stemmed from those events render him unfit to represent every single superhero. I do agree that children should not look up to him and be exactly like him, but kids should learn from him. We should take note of his life's downward spiral after his parents' death and make sure we don't make his bad decisions. He can prove to be a bit of a good role model anyways because his perseverance and focus on studying electrical engineering gave him the ability to create life saving technology.

(Arghhh I wrote waaaay too much)
The hulk is more of a chaotic neutral character. He revolves around violence and anger, but it is not something he can control. He destroys and yells and terrorizes people and villains alike, but he never does it intentionally. In the newer movies, you can see that he loathes himself sometimes for being violent. He refers to his actual hulk form as a completely separate being than him. This teaches kids that even though the hulk is violent, he is angry at himself for being violent and regrets destroying sometimes.
DeleteAlso, other superheroes prove to be good role models. Captain America grew up during the Great Depression, and even when he became famous, he didn't let it get to his head. He even disapproved of SHIELD's ways because he felt like their surveillance was wrong. He scolded them for taking away people's privacy and freedom. Captain America teaches kids to be humble and to care about other people. Another good example is spider-man. He was created to show kids it was okay to be different. Back when he was first made, being nerdy was considered bad, and "nerd" or "geek" were hard hitting insults. Peter Parker showed everyone that it was okay to be like that. I know it isn't relevant anymore because nerds are mainstream now, but if you replace "nerd" with any other type of minority, you can see how it would help kids cope. New versions of spider-man like Miles Morales give kids role models who are even more like them, as Miles is only thirteen.
~KA2
I know the x-men aren't explicitly called super heroes, but they are still observed by kids the same way. The x-men were created to combat racism and show everyone that the way someone looks, or where they're from doesn't mean you can violate their human rights. Though magneto uses violence, he is viewed as more of an antagonist. Professor X uses his mind (literally and metaphorically) to stop their unethical treatment. It teaches children to stand up for their rights, and for the rights of others. The way they antagonize magneto shows kids that violence isn't the answer.
Delete~KA2
Heroes can also have attributes that make kids feel valid. In the comics, Hawkeye is deaf and uses hearing aids. Deaf kids, or kids who use hearing aids will end up seeing how his partial disability doesn't stop him from saving people. (Alright this next example can be argued as a super villain but hear me out for a moment before you jump to conclusions; he did bad things and murdered people because he was brainwashed and was under the influence of a type of mind control) The winter soldier has a prosthetic arm, and that didn't stop him from rescuing Captain America and saving him from drowning. Young amputees will see how he can still save lives without an arm. Professor X did some pretty powerful things from a wheel chair, which proves that legs aren't necessary to be a hero.
Delete~KA2
Does Dr. Sharon lamb really want to argue that modern superheroes are the problem? If you really want to say modern, then let's actually talk about modern superheroes. The young avengers, established in 2006, features more characters that let kids validate themselves. Teddy Altman, and adaptation of the hulk, is gay, and in a relationship with William Kaplan, a superhero nicknamed Wiccan. Some teens and kids are afraid of being not straight because they think it limits them in a way, but these kids aren't any less powerful because of that. America Chavez has two mothers, and gets her powers from both of them. Almost everyone in the young avengers doesn't identify as straight. Kids won't be obligated to feel ashamed of having to parents of the same gender of modern superheroes keep this up.
Delete~KA2
(Okay I may have gone a bit overboard)
I know super heroes can still be violent, but they aren't just telling kids to go out and punch someone in the face, are they? Superpowers and crime fighting are an exaggeration of real life. You can't really use mind control and powers to end racism and police brutality like the x men do, but you can speak your mind and make your voice your weapon. Some of you guys talk about kids like kids are some kind of dumb animal that just does what it sees. Kids will often get the idea of why a person would fight . Most of you guys refer to kids as they, when it's really us. When's the last time you've seen a movie with a fight scene (whether it be superhero related or not) and thought "Hmm, I definitely feel like punching someone in the face right now" ?
Delete~KA2
Superheroes that exploit women and are completely arrogant are really horrible (eg. Iron man), but times are changing. Like I said earlier, he isn't truly a modern superhero and was made in the 1960s. The actual new heroes show more diversity and reasoning. For example, the young avengers has superheroes of plenty of races and has more women. I know when I was younger, I never saw a female superhero. That really discouraged me. But now we have Hawkeye (The young avengers version), America Chavez, and Thor's hammer has been passed down to a woman. They don't exploit these girls or use their beauty to sell the comics, and that's what kids can look up.
Delete~KA2
In conclusion, superheroes are mostly seen as a form of violent justice, but now, we can say that there is something we can learn from them.
DeleteWe all immediately think about the violence that can "poison" our minds but we tend to overlook the fact that being a superhero doesn't just mean kicking butt and being cool. It means fighting for what's right. Whether you interpret that by fighting with violence, or reason, or out of kindness Is completely up to the audience.

(hhHH IM FINALLY DONE)
:')
I LOVE this reply! SO interesting and full of sophisticated thought.
DeleteI believe that superheroes are both good and bad role models for children. For example, superheroes teach young children that you could only save the world if you destroy the whole entire city. They also teach you “watching superheroes beat up villains may not be the best image for boys to see if society wants to promote kinder, less stereotypical male behaviors, they claim,” (“Superheroes send out ‘wrong message’ to boys’). People believe that if boys watch superhero movies, then the boys will most likely be violent. The superhero Iron Man is a “playboy millionaire” that is “only ruled by selfish goals,” (“Superheroes send out ‘wrong message’ to boys’”). I believe that this is true, and most modern superheroes fit these characteristics. Both Bruce Wayne (Batman) and Tony Stark (Iron Man) show these characteristics.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, superheroes could be good role models. When these superheroes take off their costumes, they are real people with real problems. Iron man, he is disabled. He has no heart, and he almost gets killed because someone took his heart. He uses this disability as an advantage, using his iron suit. Batman was an orphan. He witnessed his own parents being murdered. They show kids that they can live with their fears and problems. Bruce Wayne doesn’t sit around and cry; he gets over it and saves the people of Gotham from villains. Iron Man, he has no heart, but he doesn’t let that stop him. He builds a suit of Iron that he can use to save people. Superheroes could be both good and bad role models.

I think that superheroes are good and bad role models. For the "bad role model" position, they are violent. In the article "Superheroes Send Out the Wrong Messages To Boys" it says,"Today's superhero is too much like an action hero who participates in non-stop violence; he's aggressive, sarcastic and rarely speaks to the virtue of doing good for humanity ". This is like the video game situation. Boys get influenced by these kind of things, especially the very young, and might think its ok to do this.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, they are good role models. As we all know, superheroes exist to save people. That's what kids also look up to. My little sister, likes Superman, and she says,"I wanna be a superhero to save people from danger." She really likes to help people and looks up to superheroes. Also, there was a five year old with cancer, and on his 5th birthday, his dad dressed up like Spiderman, jumped of the roof of their house, and came to wish his son a happy birthday. This story shows that superheroes can also make you happy. In conclusion, superheroes are good and bad rola models.
I think that superheroes are good and bad role models because the promote violence, but good because they show that commiting crimes are bad and how to do the right thing. According to Telegraph.co.uk, "Today's superhero is too much like an action hero who participates in non-stop violence; he's aggressive, sarcastic and rarely speaks to the virtue of doing good for humanity." (Superheroes Send The 'Wrong Message' To Boys). As you can see here, the superheroes of today are too violent.
ReplyDeleteSuperheroes can be good as well though. Superheroes help people in need, and stop bad guys. They also show bravery and courage and save cities, towns, and planets (I think)! This shows that superheroes can be good as well.
-Apolo L.
Superheroes used to be idols worshipped by boys, girls, adults, and children alike; they still are. But not all of them are necessarily good role models. Take Ironman, for example. Unlike Green Lantern and Superman, who, “were invented to fight for social justice and were a reaction to the rise of fascism” (Dr. Lamb), Ironman and other superheroes, “exploit women, flaunt bling and convey their manhood with high-powered guns” (Dr. Lamb) when not saving the world. For modern boys today, this is not what we wish for them to be. (But then again, we cannot control their actions and choices.) These icons portray violence and influence vengeance.
ReplyDeleteHowever, there are some appealing sides of these role models. The action and the fighting in superhero movies are factors used to draw more viewers in. Besides the action and violence, these modern idols teach morals that are important in life. In the Fantastic Four, The Thing says that others did not, “know what…walking around like some kind of circus freak,” was like, expressing the importance of accepting others. The move, The Incredible, was, “centered on family values,” (Popular Mechanics). These are just few of the types of morals that are seen in superhero movies.
It remains undecided; are they bad or are they good? They aren't necessarily both, as they convey both factors evenly and abundantly.
-Jun H.
I think superheroes can be both good and bad role models. For example, "Today's superhero is too much like an action hero who participates in non-stop violence; he's aggressive, sarcastic and rarely speaks to the virtue of doing good for humanity ". All superheroes do is violence, teaching kids it's okay to do violence if your enemy is bad. For example in batman, batman fights all of the jokers people just because of his background with his parents being dead. So for these reasons, superheroes can be bad.
ReplyDeleteAlthough they are indeed good. For example in Spider-Man, Spider-Man will fight to save someone. They're showing kids to have courage in front of your enemy in order to face them. So the superheroes fight the bad guys who kidnap someone to get them back, which in a way is good and proves a point to have courage and bravery to get back those whom you care about. So in both ways, superheroes are good and bad.
~Juliana P.
I think it depends on which superheros you're looking at, to determine if they're a good or bad role model.
ReplyDeleteYes, some superheros in this modern day world aren't humans with supernatural powers,or as Lamb puts it as; "modern depictions of superheroes like Iron Man are often playboy millionaires who are only ruled by selfish goals." In my opinion our modern day "superheros" shouldn't even be recognized as "superheros"! If you look up superheros in the dictionary or Google you will find the definition of superhero to be, "a benevolent fictional character with superhuman powers" and when you compare that to Iron man,or other modern day "superheros" to be the way Lamb stated it "millionaires", and i get that its just a way to make superheros more "realistic" or to have a twist in it, but that said twist is taking the meaning away from "superheros" and made them not as good role models as they were before. (except the exception of Batman, he's still hasn't changed)
Nothing was wrong with the classic superheros, or the "Comic book superheros". On the website "Popularmechanics.com" it says that; "We watch tons of comic-based movies here at PM, and in most, we find a mix of action, adversity and moral lessons to go with the awesome visual effects. Here are five comic book superheroes that didn't lose their do-good mentality when hitting the big screen" That means in the past, superheros were very well still good role models because they has substance, a reason to fight bad guys with a moral to their stories and even though that some modern day superheros aren't as good superheros as they were before, at least 5 of them haven't changed and still have their "do-good mentality".
-Nikamarie F.
Overall, I think that superheroes can be bad role models for children. Some kids see that they have to be strong or muscular to be a "superhero" or to be successful. While this can promote a healthy child, it can also affect them mentally. They think that they have to have some sort of masculinity to be successful so they not only judge themselves, but others judge them too by their masculinity. Men are judged more than we realize by their masculinity making it one of a boy's top insecurities. It's a huge problem in bullying. Boys are taught that they are not allowed to express their sadness or feelings because they're supposed to be the strong one in tough situations. These stereotypes are the main reasons for depression in teenage boys. We have been taught our whole lives that guys are not allowed to cry or be emotional and it's a horrible thing.
ReplyDelete"Watching superheroes beat up villains may not be the best image for boys to see if society wants to promote kinder, less stereotypical male behaviours" states Richard Alleyne. I disagree. When you watch a war movie, it doesn't make you want to go out and gun people down! It's no different with mildly violent cartoons. It all has to do with who the heroes are. They are good looking, have super powers, and are very muscular. If you ask any guy if they would rather have average masculinity or be super muscular I can garantee that they will say super muscular. It's what we have had implanted into our minds since an early age. Instead of stressing the fact that we have to be perfect, we should stress the fact that it is okay to be who you are. We should stress the fact that it isn't about what you look like, we are all human beings.
I believe that superheroes are bad role models. Not only are their actions horrible representations of what boys should do,but their solution to dilemmas is awful. For example,"Modern movie superheroes are bad role models for boys as they promote violence and revenge as a way of life, claim psychologists"(telegraph.co.uk). Since superheroes tend to solve problems by fighting their enemy or seek revenge from them,it reflects on boys and may show them that fighting against someone is the solution to situations they might face in real life such as being bullied,etc..
ReplyDeleteAlso,as Caleb has suggested, superheroes' appearances might affect a boy's mentality. Considering that most superheroes come off as strong, muscular people, boys might want to become just like them and as they do that others might judge him or bully him about his choice of becoming muscular like a superhero. Overall,we want to teach children to love themselves and superheroes affect the change were trying to make in a negative matter. As you can see see from the previous supporting details, superheroes are overall bad models for boys.
-Kayla A.#1
I do tend to play devils advocate but in this case I do believe super heros are good role models for kids. Some of you are saying that young children shouldn't be introuduced to that kind of violence, but lets be honest. Most small boys are already violent, its part of being a little boy. Super heros dont encourage violence, they encourage doing the right thing. If a man takes someones purse on the street, do we want are child to hug the thief or go get the purse?
ReplyDeleteReferring to a point I made earlier, super heros encourage doing the right thing. It makes boys believe they can be anything. And as I said in class once, its ok to lie to children. And people may say that kids will "play superhero" and hurt other kids, but roughhousing is part of being a young boy
I believe superheroes are horrible role models. They show violence in movies."Watching superheroes beat up villains may not be the best image for boys to see if society wants to promote kinder, less stereotypical male behaviours" states Richard Alleyne. They show violence and stereotypes. The superheroes are bad role models. They make boys bad models for others.
ReplyDeleteFor example,"Popularmechanics.com" it says that; "We watch tons of comic-based movies here at PM, and in most, we find a mix of action, adversity and moral lessons to go with the awesome visual effects. Here are five comic book superheroes that didn't lose their do-good mentality when hitting the big screen. The super heroes are bad role models due to their revenge and violence.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteAlthough it truly depends on the character, I believe that most super heroes are an excellent influence for anybody, not just young boys. Their media may display acts of violence, but the heroes themselves display admirable character traits that can be looked up to. Many comic-based heroes, for example, make fantastic role models. For example, "They were... connected to humanity" (popularmechanics.com). Although they were high above society and very revered, they didn't shove that in the townspeople's faces and were able to converse with them like proper people, even if the hero wasn't 100% human; this teaches young viewers a quality that, when applied to real life, all people should have.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the media modern heroes star in is often very graphic and violent, they may also make decent role models. For instance, The Incredibles "is... an action superhero movie... centered on family values." Throughout the movie, the family members protect one another and, although they get into a few arguments, show care for each other, and if children hold heroes like that as role models, they may have a better future ahead.
