As we celebrate Black History Month here in the United States (or, as I like to call it, "Why is This Only Once a Year? History Month"), I would like us to think about the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement. If you don't know very much about it, or if you'd like to learn more, try this website: The Civil Rights Movement.
First, in what way has the Civil Rights Movement changed our nation and our lives? Be specific, thoughtful, and descriptive.
Second, if Martin Luther King Jr., Medgar Evers, Rosa Parks, or any of the other myriad brave civil rights activists who are no longer with us, could see the changes we've made and the current state of race relations and civil rights in America, what would they think? How would they react? What might they say?
Third, what does the Civil Rights Movement and the idea of civil rights mean to you personally?

The Civil Rights Movement has changed our lives in many ways. It allowed us to be a more solid nation, in the way tat we are more accepting to different cultures. The movement also let us learn more about different cultures. Without the movement we would still have schools separating those of colored skin from the students of white skin. We can now build legal relationships with people other cultures. The Civil RIghts Movement has really changed our views on things.
ReplyDeleteIf the Civil Right Movement leaders were still alive in the present America, they would be proud of us. They would see us interacting with people form different cultures. They would see the fair treatment of the peoples' rights everywhere. They would say how their efforts have really paid off for America to reach this point. I feel that the Civil Right activists would be very ecstatic of what they are seeing.
In my opinion, the Civil Rights Movement gave America's citizens more equal and fair treatment. It gave this country amore varied and mixed point of view. The movement allowed America to advance even more. The mixing of races and cultures gave America a "connected" population. The Civil Rights Movement is one of the most important things that has happened to America's history, in my opinion.
The Civil Rights Movement has changed the way people live today because if the movement had not occurred people would not be able to have African-American friends or classmates. People wouldn't be able to eat with African-Americans or ride the bus with them. If the Civil Rights Movement hadn't happened I think that America would be portrayed as a nation torn between right and wrong. I think that it would be a nation where people are close-minded and stuck between the past and the present.I think that if the Civil Rights Movement had not occurred the rest of the world would not respect the United States of America. They would not believe that we were for all people rich or poor, black or white, young or old.
ReplyDeleteI think that we should take the road less taken like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the road that gives equality to all people of every color, gender and ethnicity. I think that the Civil Rights Movement has paved the road for today's kids and given them hope for the future.
In my opinion The Civil Rights Movement changed and effected lives every where in the past. But now, this is where there was a dramatic drop in all the hope people had in no more racism, equality, and fairness. There has been shootings and murders of colored people. There is a lot of racist police now, what i think is that piece of metal, and there shirt gives them the idea that they could do anything they want and not get charged and put in jail for it. All in all the Civil Rights Movement changed and effected our lives a lot.
"The shooting of Michael Brown occurred on August 9, 2014, in Ferguson, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. Brown, an 18-year-old black man, was fatally shot by Darren Wilson, 28, a WHITE Ferguson police officer. The disputed circumstances of the shooting and the resultant protests and civil unrest received considerable attention in the U.S. and abroad, and sparked a vigorous debate about law enforcement's relationship with African-Americans, and police use of force doctrine in Missouri and nationwide."
"Oscar Grant III was fatally shot by BART Police officer Johannes Mehserle in Oakland, California, United States, in the early morning hours of New Year's Day 2009. Responding to reports of a fight on a crowded Bay Area Rapid Transit train returning from San Francisco, BART Police officers detained Grant and several other passengers on the platform at the Fruitvale BART Station. Officer Johannes Mehserle and another officer were restraining Grant, who was lying face down and handcuffed . Officer Mehserle stood and, according to his attorney, said: "Get back, I'm gonna Tase him." Then Mehserle drew his pistol and shot Grant once in the back. During his court testimony, Mehserle said that Grant then exclaimed, "You shot me!" Grant was unarmed; he was pronounced dead the next morning at Highland Hospital in Oakland."
The Civil Rights Movement has impacted the way we live today greatly. Without the Civil Rights Movement, our country may have been very diverse for a long time, or might still be. I might not have met some of my classmates or friends if the Rights Movement didn't pass. White skin and colored skin might have still been a thing, not allowing everyone to be together. With the Civil Rights Movement, we can now all be together, being friends with those of different color.
ReplyDeleteWithout any of the Civil Rights Movement events happening, some people would be treated unfairly. But since the movement has passed, we can all be equal. I think that Martin Luther King Jr., or Rosa Parks, or Medgar Evers would be happy with how the world is now. I think they would be happy because we live in a world where everyone is equal, and skin color does not matter. As a side note, I think
that it shouldn't be Black History month because we should think about it any month or appreciate it all the time instead of just in February.
In my opinion, the Civil Rights Movement means freedom and equality. We would not be all together if this movement had not passed. I appreciate the people who have made it possible for us to be equal and together.
Our nation and lives have been altered advantageously because of Civil Rights Movements. If not for the Civil Rights Movement our nation would still have unfair laws against African Americans. African Americans would still have to go to different schools, restaurants, and even the minute things like water fountains. In addition, the continued segregation would in turn lead to a lack of diversity. Without the CIvil Rights Movements, I would not have met many of my friends, like Bryan said. The Civil Rights Movements have made the nation and lives of Americans very different.
ReplyDeleteIf Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, and Medgar Evers could see the changes we have made, I believe they would have mixed emotions. On one hand, they would be thrilled to see that America has abolished unfair segregation laws. These Civil Right Activists would love the sight of the diversity in America. To this they would say that their actions really did make a difference. On the contrary, they would be dismayed at the sight of the racist shootings such as the one in Ferguson recently. It would be a complete mix of happiness and sadness if Civil Rights Activists could see our progress.
To me, the Civil Rights Movements means the end of segregation. I believe that this means equal rights for everybody. The Civil Rights Movement lead to the diverse nation that America is today. The idea of civil rights should be embraced by all. Without them, America would not be as diverse, as strong, and as united.
The Civil Rights Movement (CRM) has changed the way we live today. One reason is that now black people cannot be slaves. Another thing that has changed since then is that there used to be segregated schools and now, anyone of any race can go to a University if they want to. Finally, now we have an African American president. Back then, blacks couldn't even get an education.
ReplyDeleteIf some of the CRM activists were alive today, they would probably be content with what they would see. They would be okay knowing that we all treat each other as equals. Even though some of us get picked on, at least we all have equal rights. They would see that our schools are non-segregated. All of these things, I think, would please them.
I think that the CRM was a great thing to do. Sure I’m not black, but I do understand that things were rough back then. And it warms my heart that we are past those long days as slaves. Besides, now everyone can have a good education. And who knows… we might have another black president among us.

DeleteThe Civil Rights movement has impacted our lives in many ways. First of all, there is no segregation. This way, everyone gets the same value of something. Now, we can all go to good schools. A second way is that (mostly) everyone is treated equally. This leads to a good practice of respect. Another way it has changed is that with more respect comes more rights. Now, we finally have African Americans in many high positions in this country.
ReplyDeleteIf the Civil Rights activists could see us now, they would finally know that all their hard work has payed off. They would also think that they would be over joyed when they saw all sorts of people with different colored skins communing and being friends. I think that MLK jr. would say, " I had a dream, and it has come true." Now, we can all go to one school. Or ride on one bus. Because of the Civil Rights movement, we can all live in peace.
To me, the meaning of civil rights is that all civilians have equal rights. It means that all are treated kindly with care. I feel that it means that people should not be judged on the color of their skin. But the goodness of their hearts. The civil rights movement has changed many things, and I think that the people who made this all possible will rest in peace knowing that we are all equal.

The Civil Rights Movement has changed not only the people, but our country. No more legal black slaves and no more segregated school, universities, etc. In February, we celebrate the end of segregation and the famous African Americans that have survived. They have survived attacks, went to white-only universities, etc. They have been through so much and sacrificed so much. For this we all should celebrate their amazing accomplishments that have helped change our country.
ReplyDeleteAll the Civil Rights activists have helped change our country. Some are still with us today, while others are not. So if only all of them were still alive, they would all know that their courage has been well shown through America. And just like Saskia said, we have our first African American president. Not only that the past famous African Americans helped change the world, but now many African Americans are trying their hardest to make it better.
To me, the Civil Rights Movement means hope that has been given to all African Americans. To have equal rights, it was a huge impact on us all. Just like the golden rule, "Treat others the way you want to be treated." During segregation, many blacks fought back or tried to. Now that this all changed, we don't have worry about the threats or the strong divisions between the two races. I also agree with Ms. Mansour, why do we only celebrate famous African Americans in just one month, February, and not any other months, or even throughout the whole year?
The Civil Rights Movement has impacted our lives in many ways. For one, it allowed other races aside from white to have equal rights. For example, if the movement never happened, then some of us would still be going to other schools or restaurants that are not as good as other one. Plus it allowed us to meet people of many different races heck if the Civil Rights Movement never happen I might have ever met any of my friends! Furthermore, the movement allowed many of us to not be segregated and not let us be separated by laws.
ReplyDeleteIf some of the civil rights activists were alive today saw the changes we made I think they might think it's bittersweet. On one hand, they probably be happy that segregation is gone and they've impacted the changes quite largely. But on the other hand, they might be sad to see that even though people are treating other fairly there are still people who don't and are rude to other because of their skin color. But even so, I think they would be happy to see the diversity and progress we have made over the years.
To me, the Civil Rights Movement means to not judge people by the color of one's skin, or race. Moreover, you shouldn't separate yourself from others just because they are different. The idea of civil rights is something that should be labeled as good because without it, who knows what America would be like.
These are really thoughtful, moving responses. I am proud of you all!
ReplyDeleteThe Civil Rights Movement has had a great affect on our nation and our lives. People used to be denied their rights, just because the color of their skin. Thankfully, there are now laws to prevent that, Thanks to some brave souls who stepped up and pointed out that it wasn't right. Without them there could very well still be segregation and even more discrimination then there already is. Because though it pains me to admit it, there is still discrimintion, and not just in our nation, but all over the world.
ReplyDeleteIf all the brave civil rights activist could see the world today, I think they'd be both happy and sad. This is because while segregation has been wiped out, discrimination has not. Sadly, people are still being judged on their appearance. And it's not only because of the color of their skin that their being judged. It is also because of their clothes, how they speak, whether they like to read or not, if they're shy or social, popular or an outcast, even if they're doing well in school or not. This is a problem that is quickly growing in the world today. If the civil rights activists could see the world today, I think they would quickly see this problem (especially since it is widespread) and immediately try to put an end to it, as many people are.
To me, Civil Rights Movement means equal rights for everyone, no matter how they look, what they wear, how they act, how many friends they have, or what their hobbies are. It means making good on the promise that was placed in the Pledge of Allegience; "justice for all". It means not judging people before getting to know them. It means treating people of all levels of intellect fairly. But most of all, it means standing up for what's right.
The Civil Rights Movement had a great impact on our lives today. If the laws of non-segregation hadn't passed we would still be separated from the whites. Also I would not have half of the friends I do today. Thanks to people like MLK our lives aren't based on race or the color of our skin. Whites and colored can now go to the same restaurants, use the same water fountains, etc.
ReplyDeleteIf some of the civil rights activists could see the world today, I think they would be proud of how our society has changed but also a little disappointed. They would be disappointed because even though there is no more segregation, people are still being judged on their skin and how they look. For example, people would sometimes judge an African-American person if they went into a store that has expensive products or a small store if it looked like they couldn't afford something.
In my opinion, civil rights mean freedom and equality for all people no matter the color of their skin or their looks. If the Civil Rights Movement had not happened we would still be in a world of segregated people. The colored would be separated from the whites. Also, civil rights means treating people of any race or color fairly no matter what.
The Civil Rights Movement has impacted our whole country greatly. If nobody participated in the Civil Rights Movement, our country would probably still be segregated. People were denied a lot of their rights just because of the color of their skin. But now everyone has their own rights and can't be denied jobs or college scholarships because of their skin color. Without the Civil Rights Movement, schools would still separate kids based on their skin color, stores would deny service to African-Americans, and most importantly, deny them their rights. But now our country is mostly discrimination free. There are still some people who dislike African-Americans, but you are not allowed to deny them service or a job based on their race. Many leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., and Dorothy Height have changed our country a lot.
ReplyDeleteIf the brave civil rights activists could see America today, I think they would be very proud. They would know that there hard fight for African Americans helped change America greatly. But they would also be sad. They would be sad because there is still discrimination in America. There are still people who judge others on their race. But it is not only that people judge others for. They might judge them on what they look like, how they dress, or how they sound. I think we should have people standing up against the people that discriminate against others and help put an end to it. But overall, I think the brave civil rights activists would be proud of where we are know and will be happy to know that their fight wasn't for nothing.
To me, the Civil Rights Movement means that everyone should have equal rights and should not be discriminated against no matter the reason. People should be able to do anything they want, (except for certain things such as drugs) without being judged. The Civil Rights Movement is a big part of many peoples life especially African-Americans because it fought for their rights and allowed them to have equal rights as white people.
the civil rights movement has put a deep impression on how people live their lives today. Back in the time of slavery different races didn't have the same or even fair rights. But in modern times we all have equal rights, even though a few recent events have people thinking differently. Also, like Isaiah said, we would probably not have half of the friends we have to day thanks to Martin Luther King Jr., Medgar Evers, and Rosa Parks. During a time of slavery African Americans were treated unfairly and were treated poor. But in a comparison from then to now, we have made gigantic strides in a good direction.
ReplyDeleteMartin Luther King Jr., Medgar Evers, and Rosa Parks would be extremely proud in our large step forward from where we were in their time. Especislly Martin Luther King Jr. because he was the key to all of this success toward equal rights for all people no matter the color of your skin. If you really look at it, we have been waiting patiently and not patiently for times to be at least somewhat peaceful. In my opinion, without the civil rights activists, we would be no where near where we are today.
To me, the Civil Rights Movement means that no matter your skin color, race, or anything else about your appearance you should have equal rights. Like Elijah said everyone one should be able to do anything they want (except for breaking the law) without being hated or judged for it. And coming from a bi-racial family, this means a lot to me. Like Jordan said in the 4th period blog, My family and I could have been killed during slavery times. But again, thanks to our Civil Rights activists we all have equal rights no matter what race you are.

ReplyDeleteThe Civil Rights Movement has impacted our country very greatly. One of our countries greatest flaws is that the fact that we had one of the worst discrimination cases of all time. Our country claimed that it was fixed when we abolished slavery; however, it still lived on. We discriminated colored people especially African Americans which they simply refereed to as "black". Without the civil rights movement, we would have still have discrimination, which means that countless "non-white" kids and students at our school won't be there.
ReplyDeleteI think that if MLK Jr., Medgar Evers, Rosa Parks, etc. looked at the world as it is today, with all their work impacting the world, they would be extremely happy... They'll be happy that all their work, the countless hours they spent, the insults they took, the criticism they endured, the death they suffered, will be remembered and that they will rest in piece knowing that they accomplished something far greater than the good of just African Americans, but for all people, white or black or colored. I personally think that MLK Jr. will just stare and say," My dream..."
Personally to me, the civil rights movement is huge. It is there to show that no matter your skin, your country, religion, ethnicity, anything that makes you different, you are still equal to every other person on the planet, except those who chose to lead bad lives. As Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence, "All men are created equal..." The civil rights movement truly made our country united and our independence for filled.

The civil rights movement has effected our country greatly, and has allowed many colored people to do great things in the US. Many people would not be ale to make different advances in society if it weren't for the civil rights movement. Also, many people would not have the opportunity to do everyday things that we don't even think about, such as use a public bathroom, eat in a restaurant, or go to their neighborhood school. Many great celebrities would not have had the opportunities to do what they do in the past due to segregation. If it weren't for people like MLK, Jackie Robinson, Aretha Franklin, and Rosa Parks, The United states would not be as cultured as it is today. And the world would be very different.
ReplyDeleteI think that if the late civil rights activists could see the world today, they would be proud of the advances the US has made in moving away from segregation. Although it is not completely gone, the majority of segregation and racism has left the country. They would be proud to see all of the colored people who are making a difference today, and the impact that their lives have had on them. I think that they would be happy that they have impacted our country so much. many civil rights activists that are no longer with us did not take their teachings to the grave, but are remembered and honored today as heroes. They have made a great impact in the history, and future of our country.
The civil rights movement has effected me, and others alike greatly. It has allowed colored people to b treated equally among white people, or people of other races. it has affected me personally, because many of my friends are black, and if the civil rights movement had not occurred, they would be treated unfairly, and as unequal, which should have never been the case in the first place. Also, i would not have met many people that i have met over the course of my life. The civil rights has affected me, but also about everyone in our country.
I do in fact believe that the civil rights movement has created a large impact on today's society. Through this movement, we have created a non-segregated society where we mostly accept each other's cultures and races. As you know, we used to live in a world where schools/universities only allowed white people and separated black people from white people in almost everything. Thurgood Marshall and Martin Luther King Jr., have created a lasting effect on society that stressed the powerful idea of ending legal segregation. Also, if it weren't for Thurgood Marshall, many of us wouldn't be living the way we do now. African Americans wouldn't be allowed to be taught in schools that only allowed white people and African Americans would be looked down upon, and the endless list goes on. However, it was the oh so popular Brown v. Board case where Thurgood argued and ended legal segregation.
ReplyDeleteI think the civil rights activists would be glad. They would realize that their actions have created a society Thats accepts one another. While this does hold true, they might have their downsides. It may occur to them that our society still has some racial issues. Of course, there's still those who discriminate African Americans because of their race and cry free speech.
Throughout the first paragraph, you'll notice the repetition of the word "segregation". Segregation is defined as "the enforced separation of different racial groups in a country, community, or establishment". To me breaking down the racial barriers of segregation really is important. I stress surrounding me with people that treat me equally and I'm sure the rest of the world would purely agree with me on that. Though, I don't really believe that we'll have a perfect society where everyone agrees on every single thing and is accepting of each other. However, the ending of legal segregation did give me that little bit of hope.

The civil rights movement have had a huge impact on our society all around the country. This act has allowed the colored people to have the rights that the others have today. If these acts had not happened all of the colored people would not have been acting in the roles that many of them play in these days. Now everybody excepts everybody as equal men and women. This is very important today, because of the brave activists that made these movements to advance our civil society today. The civil rights movement has made a huge impact on our society.
ReplyDeleteIf these activists were alive today, they would be exctatic to see what our society today. There is no discrimination in our world today. This is what these people have stood up for there whole lives. They would see the African americans participating in our society and they are just as equal as everybody else. Today we have an African american president and our society is much stronger due to the movement.
To me the civil rights movement means a much stronger and connected society. The people who have strived for this have got what they wanted. There is no more stress or segregation in the states. The movement has really improved our homes today all because of the civil rights movement. It is very important and it has made us better people.
I also believe that the Civil Rights Movement really had a strong impact in our lives today. I mean, people were being stripped of their rights just because of the color of their skin and genetics that they cant change and couldn't change. They were being judged by appearance and not substance. They were being treated differently for something that wasn't their fault. I get if someone was mean to you so now you don't like him/her, but the African Americans were treated like trash for no reason! People were just being judgmental about their looks, which they couldn't change. Now, however, because of the Civil Rights Movement, everyone is equal. No one is treated a bad way because of their looks or what nationality they are. Everyone has a chance for a good life and no one is being down graded anymore (bullying not included).
ReplyDeleteI think if the civil rights activists where still here and could see what effect they had on the people of today's generation, they would be happy and proud of what they did. Dr. King doesn't "have a dream" anymore, because now it isn't a dream it's reality. He HAD a dream, and he made it apart of our world. Everyone who took part of the Civil Rights Movement would think about how nice it is for children to grow up in a generation where racism isn't as bad as how it was in their time, they would think that they're glad they were able to do something that helped generations and generations more to come so they wouldn't have to go through and witness what they did.
In my opinion, before the Civil Rights Movement, means no one should ever be judged on looks, and that we are all equal, but i feel like people take advantage of that and still down grade people, but in a form of bullying. I see the time before the Civil Rights Movement as a time of intense bullying to others. The time of slavery and racism has so much in common with bullying, but with different effects and other significant differences. People were treated poorly for no reason and bullying is just like that. People say that "history repeats itself" and i see how it repeats itself in this topic, but it wasn't as extreme as it was before. The idea of Civil Rights Movement means that everyone is the same and we all have the right to be the same. We're all human and the only difference is our genetics, no one is necessarily "better" than anyone else and even if someone were, that shouldn't make them think that they could do whatever they want, like hurt someone else. Everyone should be able to do the same things and not be judged by looks. It's not even important about what you look like its about the substance of the person, their personalty, their intelligence, what they are capable of doing. The Civil Rights Movement is an example of what people could do if they have their hearts set on it, no matter what race.
-Nikamarie F.
The Civil Rights Movement has greatly impacted this nation. On numerous occasions back then, African Americans we treated very poorly. However a couple were brave to stand up for their rights which shocked the world at that time. For example, Martin Luther King Jr. fought to have everyone equal because he saw that nobody was equal. Obviously there still is racism, but not everyday there are African Americans used as slaves to do work in the field or having them work as a maid.
ReplyDeleteIf these heroes were still with us today they would feel happy to what we have done to have equality in our nation. They would all probably react like, "Oh I knew we could have done this", or, "Thank you people for making our long life dream come true". Personally the Civil Rights Movement was a spectacular feat accomplished by people who were basically shunned during the time this happened. However there are still people who are just ignorant to this and still treat people as bad as they can without breaking the law.
The civil rights movement has effected our country in many ways. People today have equal rights and are not as much judged for their color. Now people are given equal chances to participate in things, for example children when they play sports aren't separated based on their race. Today everyone is given an equal opportunity to get into a college. I think the civil rights movement has impacted us each in ways, I would not know the people I do today most likely without the civil rights movement.
ReplyDeleteI believe that if Martin Luther King jr. would be more than happy with the results of the civil rights movement. Most likely he would probably be proud that his hard work payed off. Maybe he would be excited to see children of all races at school together in our country. He might say how thrilled he is that the country has changed and improved. Also, he may say that our country is moving in great direction.
To me the civil rights movement means people are coming together for a great cause. This also means to me that people don't have to be afraid of people turning them down for their race. Also, this means to me that anyone can change the world and anyone can make a difference. Many of the people involved in the civil rights movement proved that no one can stop you from fulfilling a dream. Now everyone in the USA can feel happier to no that they are not being judged and can embrace their race.
The Civil Rights Movement has changed our nation and lives greatly. Because of the Civil Rights Movements, we are a mire stable nation and more tolerant of different cultures. Also, we'd still have race-specific schools, racial discrimination, etc.
ReplyDeleteIf some if the brave civil rights activists were still alive today, I think they would be proud of us because all those unfair laws against African Americans have been eradicated and the cultural diversity in america.
The Civil Rights movement personally means to me, giving everyone equal rights and treating everyone equally.
The Civil Rights Movement has in many ways changed our lives and nation. It has made us more tolerant of other cultures. People are not longer being treated poorly because of the color of their skin or what they believe in. We are not the nation that we were many years ago. People now can get a job, go to a school, vote, and much more and not be rejected because of their skin color. However there is still some racism today but it won't stop people from doing what they want and reaching their goals.
ReplyDeleteThese civil rights icons would be very proud of their work. I think that they would be very happy that their hard work have paid off. It would be very pleasing to them to see how they changed tour nation. Their efforts have changed our nation.
Personally I believe that the Civil Rights Movement means equality for everyone. People can do things and not be judged by their skin color. People cannot be rejected for a job or anything similar because of their skin color. The Civil Rights Movement is a great accomplishment of the civil rights activist of the past. It has greatly changed our nation and the people in it.
The Civil Rights Movement act contributed greatly to where we are today. It wasn't even 50 years ago that African Americans weren't allowed to go to some schools and were discriminated because of their skin color. While racism isn't as much of a problem as it was, we still have a long way to go because racism still exists. The Civil Rights Movement altered discrimination of race, color, religion, gender, and national origin. Multiple laws were formed, prohibiting the discrimination of people of different nationalities. While this sort of worked, racism wasn't diminished and still happens to this day. People are shot and killed, arrested, treated completely different from other people because of their skin color and nationality. I can name of many cases in which this stuff has happened.
ReplyDeleteI think that if Martin Luther King jr., Rosa Parks, or any other civil rights icon viewed the world today, while I think that they would be happy to see the diversity and some of the equality in the world, they would be sad by the amount of cases that people have gotten away with harassment and murder just because of skin color. Cases such as the Eric Garner incident, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, and others have been incidents of racism. Michael Brown was shot and killed because of his race even when posing no threat to the cop. 12 year old Tamir Rice was shot on the spot for playing with a fake gun. Cops pulled up and in under 5 seconds after the cops exited the car, Tamir was on the ground dead. As I
said before, we have come a long way with civil rights, but we are on an even longer journey.
Personally, I think that civil rights and equal treatment is one of the most important things in society and should be encourage a lot more. We still have a lot of problems with equal treatment within genders. In most places in the world, there is still a wage gap in jobs of men and women. For every dollar a white male makes, a Latina or Hispanic woman makes $0.54. For every dollar a white male makes an American Indian or Alaska native woman makes $0.59. For every dollar a white male makes, an African American woman makes $0.64. (Source: http://www.aauw.org/2014/09/18/gender-pay-gap/ ) so you tell me that racism and gender equality don't exist. While we have come a long way, we still have a much longer way to go.
Very well-written and thought out! Continually impressed with your writing...
DeleteThe civil rights movement has affected our lives greatly, in a good way. Before, coloured people were not allowed to do a lot of things that white people are allowed. One example is today, coloured people are treated just as everyone else. Also, Obama was the first black president, which is a big thing for us.
ReplyDeleteBrave role models that were civil rights activists, like Martin Luther King Jr., Medgar Evers, and Rosa Parks, would be very proud of America today. People don’t fire someone from a job just because of their skin colour. They would know that they were a part in that. I think they would say they would be contented with our nation because now a day, it is less likely to see someone being discriminated because of their skin colour. They would be very proud of our nation.
The civil rights movement has changed my life as well. If discrimination was still upon us, I would be discriminated. I would have been considered a coloured person. I think what these people did was very brave and boundless. I think they have not only changed our nation, but the people as well.

The civil rights movement has drastically changed today's society for the better. African-Americans and people of other ethnicities can live normally in the United States without being discriminated against because of their skin color, the languages they speak, or what country they came from. It changed how people viewed non-white people forever, brought equality to our country, and left people with their long awaited social freedom. The civil rights movement has set awe inspiring examples for other movements involving women's rights, LGBTIA rights, and so much more, and if those past activists could see us now, they would be proud of what we have accomplished so far. We are a diverse society, and change is now accepted more than it had originally been.
ReplyDeleteI am sure that they will be amazed when they see racial diversity has been mostly normalized. I wouldn't have any one to hang out with if all of the schools were segregated! Disappointingly, some citizens of the United States have plunged back in to the 1950s, and have began to actively discriminate against certain people. I believe that civil rights activist would be severely disappointed in us if we continue to let this happen. Like Caleb and Favian talked about, there are still people losing their lives because of racism. After the death of Michael Brown, the people of Ferguson, Missouri protested with methods such as nonviolent disobedience. All of them, including protesting children, were met with tear gas, unnecessary force, and general police brutality. Tamir Rice, a child younger than most 7th graders, is now gone because a grown man became fearful of what he looked like from a distance. Doesn't that sound familiar? Sometimes it seems like the world has gone unchanged, but we just need to maintain what we have earned and fight (peacefully) for our goals.
We need to strive for equality, more than we ever have. We cannot let the efforts of countless activists go to waste. Discrimination covering race also spills into people's genders, and woman get payed less, are even thought of as weak, and are seen by some as "inferior" to men. These are Mind sets that should be eliminated, and the remaining people who still believe in those things are bitter, lonely Brussels sprouts who don't deserve to voice their opinions anymore. Transgender people have to put up with harassment way too much, and it is outrageously unfair. Even after the death of children like Leelah Alcorn, people still think it is not an issue. People protesting here in North America, and even people protesting around the world to regain their rights use methods introduced by these activists, and that shows that these people have made such a large impact on the world.
To me, the CRM was an awe-inspiring movement that has brought our country together. We must all be integrated, and things like skin color, ethnicity, gender should not be used as an excuse to exclude someone. It has brought us so far from where we have started, from slavery and segregation, to a place where racism is finally considered immoral. I realize that we still have some way to go before we can truly reach equality, or at least a place without discrimination, but the civil rights movement has set us up for success. To have civil rights means to be seen as a regular person, to not be denied of basic needs because of who you are, and to not be excluded because of superficial attributes. I hope that one day, civil rights movements will finally pay off and we can live much easier.

Fun Fact:
DeleteDid you know that Professor X and Magneto from X-Men represent Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X? The mutants are widely known to represent racial minorities and the LGBT community, which goes along with X-Men's whole equality theme.
Cool connection!
DeleteThe civil rights movement has changed society today in a good way. First of all, colored people weren't allowed to do a lot of things that white people could. They were separated from white people and treated unfairly. Today, colored and white people are treated equally. Like karina said, president Obama is our first black president and is indeed a big accomplishment for us.
ReplyDeleteAll the people like Martin Luther King Jr and Rosa Parks and etc would be so proud and happy of how everyone is treated now. Martin Luther King Jr would be proud that his dream of peace has happened and everyone's treated with equal rights. Rosa parks would be proud that her standing up for colored people and not moving on the bus has affected today. Now everyone can sit anywhere on a bus and it won't matter anymore. There are many more reasons and people that have changed today but these are just a few and I am absolutely sure they'd love to hear how society is today.
In my opinion, the civil rights movement has been life changing and is amazing. Without it, I wouldn't have some of my friends today and they'd be treated unfairly. Even though I'm not colored and it may seem like it really wouldn't matter because I would have rights as being white, I still think that the civil rights has had a major impact of society today and is truly an amazing thing to have. The civil rights movement has changed everything about the way people are treated. Now everyone no matter what color of their skin can be all together and be friends and be treated equally. Unlike back then when this was not possible and white people were amongst themselves in a group against the colored people and they would in some cases beat them which is a terrible thing. I am thankful for the civil rights movement to have changed how everything is, because if things now we're still like back then I would feel so bad for the colored people and would be shamed upon helping them probably. The civil rights movement really has been life changing for everyone.

The Civil Rights act changed the United States in numerous ways. Firstly, people now are treated as equal, no matter what their race is. The act showed how people cannot be judged by the color of their skin or race and be treated unfairly. Back then many people were often seperated from the rest of society because of their race, and segregation. People now are more united, and live their lives normally. If the civil rights movement hadn't took place, then society would still be unfair and biased.
ReplyDeleteIf the civil rights activists were alive today, they would be pretty impressed at how society changed. They'd feel proud themselves to have shaped the country. The improvement that has happened over the course of decades should really be acknowledged by these important people. Everything they have done to contribute to the country has made that change so much in terms of equality.
The Civil rights movement to me means a lot of the history of the United States. It was a very important action, and without it, everything would be different in the present. The United States would have a huge downfall and would need someone to speak up and take action. Even you and me would be different in many ways. As stated above in many of my classmates' comments, the Civil Rights Act was a crucial point in history that deserves to be remembered for the freedom of our country during this month.

Thank you all for your thoughtful replies!
ReplyDeleteI thought I had been asking politely, but obviously the woman behind the counter at my local book store in Chicago wasn't interested in helping me find books to my collection. As I browse through books, the same woman finally approaches me after her manager finishes lecturing her.
ReplyDelete"Hello ,Ms...um...yes. Is there anything specific you're looking for?" She said as she playfully smacked her gum and impatiently waited for a response.
"I actually am. By the way, my name is Rachelle Gordon. Where are your historical nonfiction books?" I asked as I examined at her with my piercing green eyes.
Although it took her a while to remember where that genre of books are, she finally led me to the aisle.
When I arrived at the correct aisle, I quickly scanned for books that caught my eye.
"What books would you recommend?" I asked as I stroked my soft ash brown hair.
"Well, I actually don't read this genre but this book is one of our best sellers" she said as she lazily grabbed a random book and placed in it my palm.
"Woah isn't she in a hurry..." I thought to myself.
"Is that all I can do for you today?" She questioned me.
I replied yes waiting for the worker to leave.
